If you want to do something about the huge problem of food waste, you may want to join CEC members who are volunteering with Peninsula Food Runners, a nonprofit that distributes close-to-expiration-date food from supermarkets and other sources to soup kitchens and shelters that need it. You will be amazed at the amount of premium food you’ll rescue that otherwise would wind up in the landfill. Find out how you can help at Peninsula Food Runners.

You can choose to be notified whenever a need pops up or when special big deliveries are needed (such as just before Thanksgiving and Christmas). Door-to-door runs usually are completed in about an hour. Peninsula Food Runners is also seeking a volunteer to deliver leftover food from the Farmer’s Market at the College of San Mateo (CSM) to two locations in San Mateo once a month.
